2021. STAN creates a magazine, for the first time ever. You know, one of those booklets with text and illustrations and – you’ve guessed it – photographs. We asked five student-photographers to provide visuals for our magazine, each with their unique style and vision. The incredible result of this collaboration can now be seen in the official STAN-magazine, but how did those pictures come into existence? STAN found out for you. In this article you get to know Roy, graphic design student at KdG.

Humans as a source of inspiration

What inspires me? It doesn’t matter where I am or what situation I’m in: most inspiration I get from the people around me. That’s why I’m always open to meeting new people (which usually works out pretty well for me), hearing their stories, and through that acquire new perspectives. When taking pictures for the STAN magazine I always tried to really get to know the people I portrayed, which really helped the process.

A creative process can go several ways

Before I start photographing, I find it important to look at references in books and on Instagram. For the STAN magazine, I wanted to work with strong colors that really stood out, and I do feel like I achieved that.t

The mental process that precedes the actual photographing isn’t always easy for me. In a 9-to-5 job, not much can go wrong; you often repeat the same work. But a creative occupation can really toss you curveballs sometimes, and the project can end up great but it can also go very wrong. Taking that mental step to actually get started and to not be afraid to try out new things is sometimes a little daunting to me.
