Students in Antwerp come in all shapes and sizes. While some prefer to stay a few more years in ‘Hotel Mom’, others choose to move into a dorm. Are you looking for one, but have no idea where to start? No worries, STAN is here to help you on your way!

Why live in a dorm?

You’ve probably asked yourself: “Is it really worth moving into a dorm?”
In short: YES! Living in a dorm in Antwerp has plenty of advantages. To help ease your doubts, we’ve listed a few of the many advantages. Being a dorm student means freedom and responsibility. It’s a taste of real life.

  • Want to stay a bit longer at the club, but the last bus leaves in twenty minutes? Dorm!
  • Planning a romantic dinner without mom and dad’s watchful eyes? Dorm!
  • Rather stay in bed an extra hour than commute to class? Dorm, dorm, dorm!

In short: living in a dorm is an experience you really don’t want to miss as a student.

Finding a Good Dorm

That’s a different story. And if you’re new to student life, the search can be overwhelming. Luckily, you don’t have to do it alone. Check out Kotweb, an initiative by STAN and Antwerp’s higher education institutions. It’s your go-to platform for all dorm-related questions. With over 5,000 dorms, studios and apartments listed, your dream spot might just be one click away.

Flemish Dorm Label

Since January 1st, 2025, the old Antwerp Kotlabel has been replaced by the Flemish kotlabel. This label looks at three key criteria:

  • Housing quality standards
  • Fire safety
  • Correct permits

Important: Kotweb and the city of Antwerp use the Flemish Kotlabel, but landlords are not obligated to apply it. The same goes for the model student housing tenancy agreement. So always make sure to check! Want to look into what should be included in a rental contract yourself? Visit the Flemish government website where everything is clearly laid out to avoid unwanted surprises.

I found a dorm online… Now what?

Great! If you found a dorm that ticks every box on your checklist, you’re off to a good start.
But before your excitement takes over and you sign anything on the spot, it’s best to schedule a viewing first. Go check it out. Smell the place. Listen. (And yes, make sure the shower works and the window opens.) Try chatting with the current tenants too. They often know more than the ad or the landlord lets on. A visit like this can save you a lot of stress later if any hidden issues pop up.

Finding a dorm can be a bit of a search, literally and figuratively. But don’t let that discourage you. With the right preparation and a little patience, you’ll find a place that truly suits you. Whether you go for a cozy dorm room, a studio, or an apartment with friends, living in a dorm is more than just having a roof over your head. It’s where you’ll learn, laugh and live. Good luck. And don’t forget: STAN has your back!
